In response to the COVID-19 crisis we have put into place an emergency food delivery service that caters to older adults, families, individuals with disabilities, and new immigrants. Additionally, PPE supplies, including gloves, hand sanitizer, and masks, are distributed to individuals and families. Supplies are purchased by GCEA or donated through vendors such as the Violence Prevention Coalition (VPC) and Oakland Unite. Our program is committed to helping maintain and improve the physical and social well-being of older individuals in the under-served areas of the Pan - African community. GCEA promotes independence and improvement of quality of life for members of the community who are living on low incomes and may not have access to much needed resources.
PMH Public Health Mobile
GCEA partners with Oakland’s Outreach Council, a collective of grassroots organizations serving the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together we designed The People’s Health Mobile (PMH) to serve as a mobile “one-stop-shop” to meet community members’ needs and to disrupt the spread of COVID-19. The PMH will travel to Oakland’s “hotspot” neighborhoods that display the most need. At these locations we provide vital information/ materials, distribute resources, host pop-up testings for COVID-19 and STIs, and conduct surveys to gather data around testing and vaccination rates.
We assist individuals, namely immigrants, who have trouble registering for COVID-19 testing or vaccination by providing them with application assistance and referring them to our partner vaccination sites such as Umoja health and Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless. We also provide much-needed transportation to partner testing/vaccination sites for clients who are unable to acquire transportation to these locations. These sites include: Fremont High School, Hayward Adult School, Old Decoto School in Union City, Alameda County HealthCare for the Homeless sites, the Weekes Community Center in Hayward, and UMOJA pop-up sites including Akoma Market, Castlemont High and Youth Uprising, and the Center of Hope which is a stationary site.
